AGUA PARA LA VIDA Nicaragua
Covid-19 Response: Since the outbreak of the pandemic in March, APLV N has been conscious of the fact that many communities rely on APLVN for clean drinking water in their communities. Access to rural communities has been cut off due to flooding and concerns about the virus. APLV is working on repairing and restoring water pumps whenever possible. They are installing foot operated hand washing stations in towns across the country. They are also working on a sanitation campaign to publish on social media and spread on rural radios in order to get the preventive recommendations given by global health institutions across as much as possible.
Agua Para La Vida (APLV) or "Water for Life" helps communities in rural Nicaragua- where 50% of households currently live without access to clean water- build their own gravity flow clean water and sanitation systems. APLV offers technical expertise and support to local residents during each phase of the project , including the final phase when it becomes 100%. As part of this process, APLV works with communities to secure commitments from municipal governments that ensure support for the water project for the long term. They also offer holistic education about clean water and hygienic sanitation and operate a technical school that is training the next generation of water technicians.
APLVN doesn't build water and sanitation systems for communities. Instead, they teach local residents to build, maintain and secure the future of their water and sanitation infrastructure. They offer education that, in combination with access, lead to the best health outcomes. They do this all at low cost and also require financial and/or labor investments from the communities in which they work so that the water flows long after the NGO presence is gone. These are the types of approaches that Pennywise is proud to support.
