Barefoot Artists works to bring the transformative power of art to impoverished communities around the globe through participatory, multifaceted projects that foster community empowerment, improve the physical environment, promote economic development and preserve indigenous art and culture. In addition to collaboratively designed and created art installations, Barefoot Artists’ projects include job training, micro-lending initiatives and innovative workshops for youth.
Barefoot Artists has carried out projects in Kenya, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Rwanda, China, Taiwan, Ecuador, Syria, Republic of Georgia, Haiti, and Palestine and the United States.
In her own words, when Barefoot Artist founding director, Lily Yeh, sees “brokenness, poverty, and crime in inner cities" she also sees, "enormous potential and readiness for transformation and rebirth." Barefoot Artists translates this vision into action by leveraging limited resources and engaging communities to create beauty out of what would have been waste. Pennywise is proud to support their incredible work.
