Center fo Justice Reform - Vermont Law School
Now more than ever, the criminal justice system is financially and ethically untenable. Plagued by the unsustainable cost of incarceration, high recidivism rates, the devastating impact on children of incarcerating parents, the burden and collateral consequences of a criminal conviction, a “school to prison” pipeline borne out of excessively harsh academic disciplinary measures, and racial, economic, and geographic inequalities, our communities need alternatives to the traditional criminal justice model. The Center for Justice Reform at Vermont Law School is a statewide, national, and international educational and training hub for justice reform efforts. The Center strives to address deficiencies in our justice systems and to train the next generation of justice leaders.
Pennywise is proud to partner with the Center for Justice Reform. Already we've had the opportunity to be a sponsor of the Center's International Restorative Justice Conference which brought together practitioners and justice reform leaders from around the world and we supported the Center's Expungement Days which, in partnership with state prosecutors, helped people remove eligible misdemeanors from their records so that their rights could be restored. As these two initiatives taken together demonstrate, the Center not only identifies and promotes best practices, but also builds the partnerships and leverages limited resources needed to translate those practices into real world positive change. This type of approach is what Pennywise is all about. We are excited to see what the future of this collaboration will bring.
