In October of this year, the Pennywise Foundation and Affirmation Arts presented Amazon Hope.
The event involved:
More than 18 hours of working meetings among indigenous leaders, preeminent Amazonian scientists and renowned scholars aimed at developing shared priorities for protecting the southern Amazon and empowering its people.
A world class art exhibit celebrating indigenous art and culture of the southern Amazon.
A unique fundraising and public awareness event that utilized face to face interactions, experiential artistic installations, and graphic depictions to raise awareness of the crisis in the Brazilian rainforest and offer opportunities to help abate it.
Amazon Hope generated tens of thousands of dollars that will go directly back to the people of and preservation efforts in the southern Amazon.
It's not too late to be part of the Hope! Thanks to the generous support of the William Talbott Hillman Foundation, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar until the end of the year. Now's the time to give!
Pennywise continued to work with partners to address monetary barriers to expungement in Vermont. Expunging old criminal records reduces recidivism, enhances public safety, and increases personal income. In addition to generating resources that helped vulnerable Vermonters pay fees and reap these benefits, we developed a system of data collection that is documenting the impact of those resources and making the case for policy reform.
Pennywise directors and project partners from the U.S. and Brazil convened in the Amazon's Upper Xingu Region to continue to help build a sustainable future for the Kuikuro people. Pennywise helped lead the effort through project planning, funds administration, reporting and project evaluation. To date, the project has developed a GIS monitoring system for data collection and resource mapping and trained local community members on how to use it. Next steps include completing a cultural center and helping the Kuikuro further develop their organizational infrastructure.
We are so grateful to our expanding number of friends and supporters. None of this work would be possible without you!
